It’s #orangeshirtday… A good day for me, as a settler, to feel shame & regret, and to do something about it

TODAY'S MEDITATION

It is September 30. In Canada, it is #OrangeShirtDay. A day to remember all the children who’ve suffered at the hands of colonial powers, and all of those who still suffer today. They walk amongst us.

I am a settler, the son of settlers, the grandson of settlers on this land. I was born on unceded (stolen) lands. Today I wear an orange shirt to remember.

I live a privileged life.

I am blessed to be born into paradise, & I respectfully acknowledge that I live, work, teach, & play on the unceded traditional territory of the We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum, and K'omoks First Nations.

I am a settler and benefit from a colonial system.

I honour the presence and power of these First Nations, and all other First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples whose territories on which we reside.

I regret the pain and suffering my people and the colonial system that sanctioned our war against these First Nations, and all First Nations in the colonial world.

I bow to them.

I thank them for their grace and tolerance.

I pray for truth between our peoples.

I pray for reconciliation between our peoples.

And, feeling the shame and regret of my settler ancestor's patrimony, I resolve to do things differently in this generation, in my life.

TODAY’S INSPIRATIONS

🌀 The heart teaches us to exert when giving and to relax for receiving. When we exert to get, we never experience the sensation of having received...this is then bound to the malady of greed...the constant need to get. (Guru Singh & Guruperkarma Kaur)

🌀The Conscious Warrior is ruthlessly honest with himself while being kind to others. (John Wineland, Precept 1)

🌀You’re not like that now. (My beloved, my Oracle)

TODAY'S SUGGESTED PRACTICE

Day 30 of this month's practice, take 8 minutes today to sit and listen to, or chant, the Ganesha Meditation... This meditation (Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha) brings our attention to our foundations, our roots, and invokes the Indian god Ganesha, a curious yet powerful character who removes all obstacles.

Please read through first, then ...

• Today, sit (or stand) in stillness with this question…. Given that not one of us is free of the weight of our patrimony, the life we live today bought with someone else’s pain and suffering, How does your patrimony weigh on you? How are you holding space for the shame and the regret, to become a better man than our forebears? This is deep nervous system work. If you are feeling overwhelmed, know that you are in very good company. Reach out to a trusted friend, an elder if you have one.

• Setup: your "setup" for this month's daily practice is how you "hold onto yourself" and receive...

• Begin by closing your eyes and aligning your body into its truest, most elegant posture, tucking your chin to lift your heart, tilting your pelvis to straighten your spine. Become still, more still than you've ever been. Your alignment is the physical training for trustworthiness. Bring your hands to your heart, right (masculine) over left (feminine).

• Focus on feeling the vibration. That is all.

• Set your timer for eight minutes or listen to the “Ganesha” mantra by Deva Primal here:

• As the timer signals or the mantra ends allow your eyes to slowly open. Take three, relaxed breath cycles, no pressing, no effort, and feel yourself full, without thoughts, open. Safe to receive. Then, step into your day, letting the mantra echo as a nourishing vibration whenever you become still. You don't need to DO anything. Let the world come to you with its demands, its complaints, and yes, its endless tide of gifts and blessings.✨✨✨
